Our Committment

The Centre works hard to provide a varied Community Activity Programme as part of its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

A number of key areas which relate to the local community and the needs of the business have been identified.

The Community Activity Programme and the resources that are focussed on this, are concentrated on the following areas:

  • Environment
  • Family health & welfare
  • Education & retail skills

Environment

The Centre was the first shopping centre in the UK to gain an “excellent” rating, the top environmental sustainability accolade in 2008.

Close to 69% of all materials demolished during the construction of Elements Square was recycled into the new scheme,   that’s 16,705 tonnes – the weight of 3,341 elephants!

The building itself is highly insulated and constructed from low environmental impact materials with a long design life.

The public spaces in The Centre use an energy efficient air displacement system with natural air and smoke extract.

Rainwater harvesting is utilised for flushing toilets. Hot water is supplied to the public toilets using a combined system of roof mounted solar panels and gas fire calorifiers.

The Centre also has an extensive Building Energy Management System which recognises seasonal efficiencies and controls, among other things, ventilation, lighting and water use/flow which reduce energy consumption.

Over 60% of waste generated by The Centre and its retailers is recycled, reducing the need to send it to landfill.
